POWER ON DISPLAY AS BLUE CRABS BEAT LONG ISLAND FOR FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON

(Waldorf, MD., Apr. 21, 2017) – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (1-1) rallied late to claim a 6-5 victory over the Long Island Ducks (1-1) in their second game of their 10thanniversary season.

Long Island jumped out to an early lead, scoring 3 runs in the first off of Blue Crabs starter Pat Misch. The big blow in the inning was a deep two-run homer to left-center field by the Ducks first baseman Nate Freiman, his first on the season, putting Long Island ahead 3-0 early. After the top of the first, the game entered an hour long rain delay, putting an end to Misch’s Blue Crabs debut after just one inning of work.

A solo shot by Alex Burg in the second extended Long Island’s lead to 4-0, before the bats came alive for Southern Maryland in the bottom of the third. A leadoff single by Edwin Garcia started a rally in the inning, which, after a flyout, featured four straight singles from the top of the Blue Crabs lineup off of Long Island starter Rafael Perez. The Blue Crabs plated three runs in the inning and cut the deficit to 4-3, while ending Perez’s night after allowing 3 earned runs in 3 innings of work.

The Ducks scored another in fifth on an Alex Burg single, before the Blue Crabs were able to tie the game in the bottom of the 6th inning. Zach Cone drew a one out walk off of reliever Zac Treece, before Patrick Palmeiro hit a no-doubter to left field, sending it over the Mini Monster and giving the Blue Crabs new life in a 5-5 game.

Reliever Rob Carson (1-0) took over for the Blue Crabs, throwing a scoreless top of the eighth, after struggling in his outing yesterday. “I met with (pitching coach) James Frisbie after last night’s game and tweaked a little bit of my delivery,” Carson said after the game. “I felt like this changed a lot for me and allowed me to command the inside part of the plate better and help the team get a win.”

The Blue Crabs were able to take their first lead of the game in the bottom of the eighth, as newly acquired catcher Mike Blanke hit a long home run to left field off of Chen-Hui Tsao (0-1) to put the Blue Crabs ahead of his former team. This run allowed Southern Maryland to turn the game over to their closer, Cody Eppley (S,1) who worked a 1,2,3 bottom of ninth and notched his first save of the season.

“We had to rely on the bullpen a lot after a rain-shortened outing from our starter, but the guys fought hard and pitched well after the rain slowed down,” said Blue Crabs Manager John Harris. “I’m happy with the way the offense looked as well, but it comes down to defense and pitching which we lacked last night, but showed up tonight to get us the win.”

The Blue Crabs continue their 10th Anniversary Season Saturday, April 22nd against the Ducks at 6:35. The Blue Crabs will send a familiar face in RHP Daryl Thompson to the mound. He is set to face off against Long Island’s Keith Couch, who will be making his debut for The Flock.

BLUE CRABS BATS STRUGGLE IN 10TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON OPENING GAME

(Waldorf, MD., Apr. 20, 2017) – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (0-1) struggled at the plate, scratching across just one run in a 7-1 opening day loss to the Long Island Ducks (1-0) in front of 3,998 fans in their home opener.

Long Island got on the board early against the Blue Crabs opening day starting pitcher Justin De Fratus. An error in right field by Zach Cone with 2 outs kept the first inning alive for Long Island, and an RBI single by Nate Freiman gave Long Island an early lead, which they never relinquished. De Fratus (L, 0-1) threw 6 innings giving up two unearned runs on nine hits. “I’m really happy with how I threw the ball tonight,” said De Fratus. “I just need to work on closing those innings out and covering up any mistakes behind me.”

Long Island scratched across another run in the top of the fourth inning, allowing Long Island’s Alex Burg to score on a Delta Cleary Jr. single, after Burg reached on an error to lead off the inning. The Blue Crabs answered in the bottom of the fourth, picking up their only run on a Zach Cone sacrifice fly that scored Danny Muno from third.

Making his fourth consecutive opening day start for the Ducks, Long Island starter John Brownell (1-0) picked up the win, tossing five innings, giving up just one hit, one run, and striking out five. With a 2-1 lead Brownell turned it over to a stellar bullpen for the Ducks. Four Long Island relievers combined to allow just three hits and no runs across the final four innings.

Long Island strung together two hits and a walk to load the bases in the seventh inning for Cody Puckett. Puckett was hit by an 0-2 fastball from Southern Maryland’s Rob Carson, extending the Long Island lead to 3-1, before Cody Hebner came out of the bullpen for the Blue Crabs to record the final two outs of the inning.

The Ducks took that 3-1 lead into a rain delay to start the eighth inning, and when they returned the offense exploded, scoring four runs on two hits and three walks in the top of the eighth, and extending their lead to 7-1, a score that would hold the remained of the night.

“It was disappointing because you always want to win, but there are 139 more games to look forward to this season,” said Blue Crabs Manager John Harris. “Brownell is tough but our guys are going to hit and they will be fun to watch when they hit their groove.”

The Blue Crabs continue their season Friday, April 21st against the Ducks. The Blue Crabs will send six-year MLB veteran LHP Pat Misch to the mound, with Long Island starting another veteran in LHP Raphael Perez.
