WALDORF, MD.—Southern Maryland managed to salvage the series with the win over the Skeeters by the final of 5-4.
RHP Daryl Thompson came into his start looking for his first win since July 29th, and threw seven innings, allowing just one run and striking out six. In fact, Thompson was firing a no hitter until Jeremy Barfield spoiled things with a two out double in the top of the fourth.
Both teams were held scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when Travis Scott tripled in Jeremy Barfield who came chugging home from third to make it 1-0 Sugar Land.
The lead was short lived as Zach Wilson tied the game with his 19th homerun of the season over the wall in left. A couple of batters later, RHP Ryan Mattheus was summoned out of the pen after RHP Michael Nix issued a walk, and gave up a double to Walton to put runners at second and third. The next hitter Eric Garcia lifted a sacrifice fly to right allowing Gustavo Molina to score to make it 2-1.
Fast forward to the bottom of the eighth, RHP Robbie Weinhardt loaded the bases with two by issuing three walks. Bryant Nelson, who played in his 1,006 career game to tie the Atlantic League all-time record, smashed a bases clearing double to right center to bring the score to 5-1.
The Skeeters made it interesting in the top of the ninth scoring three runs on the homer off the bat of Patrick Palmeiro. RHP Cody Eppley was brought in out of the pen and struck out Ricky Hague to end the ballgame and give the Blue Crabs the 5-4 victory.
Skeeters’ outfielder Jeremy Barfield had another two hits and recorded six hits in total including three homeruns. Meanwhile, Bryant Nelson, Zach Wilson, and Jamar Walton each banged out two hits.
The homestand continues tomorrow night as the Blue Crabs welcome former Manager Stan Cliburn and the New Britain Bees to town. The first pitch is set for 7:05 P.M.
