ROSA HOMERUN POWERS BEES PAST BLUE CRABS
Three-Run Sixth Drops Blue Crabs
(New Britain, CT., Jul. 15, 2017) – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (5-3) fell in game two against the New Britain Bees (4-4) 4-1, with a two-run homerun from Jovan Rosa leading the way.
The Blue Crabs got on the board first for the second day in a row, putting up a run in the first inning. All-Star Game MVP Zach Wilson connected for a solo shot off Kyle Simon (6-6), putting Southern Maryland ahead 1-0 early. However, the Bees responded quickly, as a double from James Skelton scored Yusuke Kajimoto to tie the game in the bottom half of the first.
The starting pitchers took over from there, as Simon and Drew Hayes (4-4) traded four straight scoreless innings. Hayes ran into trouble again in the sixth, ultimately giving up the tie and being removed from the game. Skelton led-off the inning with a single, before Jovan Rosa crushed a two-run homerun off the scoreboard to give New Britain the lead. After Hayes was lifted in favor of Sam Runion, the Bees added another insurance run. Three straight singles starting with Jordan Hinshaw and ending with Jamar Walton put the Bees ahead 4-1.
The three-run advantage was plenty for Simon, who continued to dominate the Blue Crabs from the mound. The right-hander allowed just two hits over the final three innings, en route to his first complete game of the season. Simon finished the outing allowing just seven hits, while picking up eight strikeouts.
The Blue Crabs return to action Sunday, July 16th, for series finale of the three-game series against the Bees. Southern Maryland will send RHP Brian Grening (7-3, 2.76) to the mound, coming off a win in the Atlantic League All-Star Game. He will matchup with New Britain’s RHP Mike Lee (2-5, 4.13), who the Blue Crabs have defeated twice already this season. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. on Saturday at New Britain Stadium.
