GRENING LEADS BLUE CRABS OVER BEES IN SERIES FINALE

Blue Crabs Extend Division Lead with 2-1 Win

(Waldorf, MD., Jun. 18, 2017) – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (31-24) defeated the visiting New Britain Bees (21-34) 2-1, behind 7.2 strong innings from Brian Grening (5-1).

The Blue Crabs got on the board early, putting up a run in the bottom of the first. The inning started slow, as the rally came with two outs. Back-to-back walks to Zach Wilson and Michael Snyder started it, before a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. Mike Lee (1-5), delivered a wild pitch to Devon Rodriguez the next at-bat, allowing Wilson to cross, and giving Southern Maryland a 1-0 lead.

Grening and Lee the battled back and forth for five more innings, with Grening allowing just three hits to the Bees through seven frames. Lee allowed only three hits on the other side, before Cory Vaughn led-off the seventh with a solo homerun. Vaughn’s fifth homer of the season gave the Blue Crabs a much-needed insurance run, pushing the lead to 2-0.

Grening finally ran into trouble in the top of the eighth, as New Britain strung together three hits in the inning. After battling for the first two outs, Grening gave up a two-out single to Yusuke Kajimoto. Back-to-back singles from James Skelton and Jovan Rosa followed, scoring Kajimoto. With the lead cut to 2-1, Manager John Harris turned to the bullpen, bringing in Zack Thornton to strand the two runners. Thornton did his job, coming in and immediately getting a groundball from Craig Maddox, holding the one-run lead.

It looked like the Blue Crabs might put up an insurance run in the eighth, as Snyder came up with a two-out double with a runner on. Wilson, who was on first, was waved around third and sent home, but the relay throw from Jake McGuiggan was well in time, cutting down Wilson at the plate to end the inning.

Cody Eppley (S,16) came on for the top of the ninth, cruising through the first two batters in the inning. After allowing a two-out single, Eppley forced a weak grounder to second, which was fired on to first to close the victory.

The win advances the Blue Crabs to 31-24 on the season, as they sit atop the Freedom Division. They return to action Monday, June 19th for a four-game road series against the York Revolution. Southern Maryland will send RHP Gaby Hernandez (4-1, 2.17) to the mound, looking to take the series opener. He will matchup with York’s RHP Victor Mateo (2-5, 3.14), for his third start against the Blue Crabs this season. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 P.M. on Monday at PeoplesBank Park.
