BLUE CRABS OUTMATCHED IN GAME TWO AGAINST BRIDGEPORT

Blue Crabs Fall 10-3 Against Bluefish

(Waldorf, MD., May 20, 2017) – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (13-16) fell in the second game of their three-game series against the Bridgeport Bluefish (17-13) 10-3, tying up their road series against the Bluefish.

The Blue Crabs fell behind early and were never able to recover in this one. Bridgeport jumped on starter Drew Hayes (0-1), putting up three runs in the second inning. Four straight singles with one out from the Bluefish put across two runs in the inning. A groundout from Angelys Nina recorded the second out, but allowed D’Arby Myers to come across, putting the score at 3-0. Bridgeport added to their lead in the fourth, when Jonathon Galvez hit a solo shot off Hayes, Galvez’ team leading fifth homerun off the season.

Southern Maryland cut into the lead in the top of the sixth inning, when Michael Snyder launched his fourth homer of the season. The two-run shot brought home Edwin Garcia, and brought the Blue Crabs to within just one run of Bridgeport. However, the Bluefish responded quickly to those two runs, putting up two more of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Back-to-back singles led off the inning, before a one-out single from Myers brought home Tony Abreu. After advancing to third on a wild pitch and stolen base, Myers crossed the plate on a Luis Hernandez single, putting Bridgeport ahead 6-2.

Bridgeport put up two more runs off the Southern Maryland bullpen in the seventh inning. After two straight singles and a walk loaded the bases, another single from Abreu extended the lead to 7-2. A sacrifice fly from Jose Cuevas added another run to the lead, bringing home Jose Gil from third.

The Blue Crabs added one more run in the top of the eighth, when new acquisition Luis Alen connected for his first homerun of the season. The Bluefish responded once again though in the bottom of the inning, when a two-out double from Sean Burroughs brought home two, extending the lead to 10-3, where it would finish.

The loss drops the Blue Crabs to 13-16 on the season, as well as to 2-3 against Bridgeport. They currently sit third in the Freedom Division, trailing both Sugar Land and Lancaster.

The Blue Crabs return to action Sunday, May 21st for the series finale against the Bluefish. Southern Maryland will send RHP Brian Grening (1-1, 2.91 ERA) to the mound, for his second start against the Bluefish. He will matchup with Bridgeport’s RHP Cory Riordan (1-2, 4.06 ERA), facing the Blue Crabs for the first time this season. First pitch is scheduled for 1:12 P.M. on Sunday at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
