BLUE CRABS WIN DRAMATIC GAME ONE IN BRIDGEPORT
Blue Crabs Knock Off Bluefish in Extra Innings

(Waldorf, MD., May 19, 2017) – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (13-15) won the series opener of their three-game series against the Bridgeport Bluefish (16-13) 5-3, in extra innings to end a four-game losing streak.

The Blue Crabs got on the board first, putting up two runs in the top of the second inning. Cory Vaughn led off the inning with a walk, before Devon Rodriguez continued his hot streak, doubling to score Vaughn. Rodriguez scored three plays later, when Gary Brown singled, putting the score at 2-0.

The Bluefish responded in the bottom of the inning, taking over the lead with three runs of their own. With two runners on already, Bridgeport strung together three straight hits. A single from Santiago Nessy plated the first run, before a bases loaded double from D’Arby Myers followed two batters later. The Myers’ double scored Nessy and Tony Abreu, putting the Bluefish ahead 3-2.

The game remained scoreless for three more innings, behind strong pitching from Southern Maryland’s starter Daryl Thompson, as well as Bridgeport’s starter Tyler Badamo. In the top of the sixth inning, Vaughn and Rodrgiuez teamed up again, this time to tie the game. Vaughn started with a two-out double, and another Rodrgiuez single plated him from second.

The bullpen’s battled back and forth across the seventh and eighth innings, with Southern Maryland stranding two runners in each inning. The game stayed at 3-3, heading into the 10th inning. With one out in the top of the inning, Southern Maryland put together back-to-back-to-back singles. Zach Wilson scored the first run of the inning on a wild pitch, before Rodriguez picked up his third RBI, scoring Vaughn once again with a single, and bringing the score to 5-3.

Cody Eppley (S,8) worked a scoreless bottom half of the inning, picking up his eighth save of the season. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Blue Crabs, and improved them to 13-15 on the season.

The Blue Crabs return to action Saturday, May 20th for the second game against the Bluefish. Southern Maryland will send RHP Drew Hayes (0-0, 4.50 ERA) to the mound, in his second start for the team. He will matchup with Bridgeport’s RHP Rainy Lara (2-0, 2.55 ERA), in his first start against the Blue Crabs this season. First pitch is scheduled for 6:12 P.M. on Saturday at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
