BLUE CRABS SPLIT DAY TWO WITH SOMERSET
Blue Crabs Split Another Doubleheader with Patriots
(Waldorf, MD., May 14, 2017) – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (12-12) took game one of a Sunday seven-inning doubleheader 7-3, before dropping the second against the Somerset Patriots (16-8) 13-5, as the Blue Crabs celebrated Mother’s Day at the ballpark.
The Blue Crabs got off to a quick start in game one, as Zach Wilson picked up his 20th RBI of the season, hitting a sacrifice fly to score Jose Lozada from third. The Blue Crabs added two more in the second inning, when three straight hits, including back-to-back doubles from Patrick Palmeiro and Edwin Garcia, extended the lead to 3-0.
Southern Maryland’s starter, Daryl Thompson (2-2), was dealing on the mound once again, holding the Patriots scoreless through his first five innings of work.
“It felt good to be back home, having thrown on the road my last start,” said Thompson. “The crowd was great and I just wanted to go out there and get a win for my team, and for all the mother’s celebrating their Mother’s Day with the Blue Crabs.”
Thompson ran into some trouble in the sixth inning, when the Patriots plated three, tying the game at 3-3. The scoring started when Aharon Eggleston singled, scoring Alfredo Rodriguez from third. A fielder’s choice scored the second run of the inning, before a sacrifice fly from Carlos Guzman scored the tying run for Somerset.
The Blue Crabs answered in the bottom half of the inning, quickly getting the lead back for their starter. A ground-rule double from Cory Vaughn got the inning started, before a one-out homerun from Palmeiro regained the lead. Gary Brown added a two-run shot of his own later in the inning, giving the Blue Crabs a 7-3. Cody Eppley came in for the seventh inning, working another one-two-three, and clinching game one of the doubleheader.
The script was flipped for game two, when Somerset jumped on the Blue Crabs early, putting up five runs off starter David Russo in the first. Russo walked two batters, before the clean-up hitter, Jerry Sands, hit his sixth homerun of the season, a three-run shot to left-center field. A Scott Kelly triple allowed two more to cross for the Patriots, giving them a 5-0 lead before the Blue Crabs even came to the plate.
Southern Maryland responded in the bottom of the second, putting up five runs of their own. Palmeiro hit his second homerun of the day, another two-run shot, to get the scoring started. After two hit-by-pitches and an error on the shortstop loaded the bases, Michael Snyder promptly cleared them, roping a double down the third base-line, and tying the game 5-5.
Somerset got the lead back in the top of the third, when Carlos Guzman scored on a Chris Grayson single. The Patriots then broke the game open in the fourth inning, putting up six runs off of three different pitchers for Southern Maryland. After a lead-off walk, Olmo Rosario hit a two-run homer, bringing across the first two in the inning. A Guzman double scored another, before a bases loaded walk with two-outs allowed Guzman to score. Rosario came back up to bat with the bases loaded, and was hit by a fastball that came too far inside, allowing the sixth run of the inning to cross and put Somerset up 12-5.
Somerset added another run in the top of the fifth, after Yovan Gonzalez led-off with a single, and scored on a Scott Kelly double. Justin Wright (2-0), came in and worked two scoreless innings of relief, picking up the win in the 13-5 finale of the four-game series. The doubleheader split brought the Blue Crabs to 12-12 on the season, just two games out of the Freedom Division lead.
The Blue Crabs return to action Tuesday, May 16th for the opener in a three-game series with the Lancaster Barnstormers. Southern Maryland will send RHP Brian Grening (1-1, 3.33 ERA) to the mound, for his second start in a row against the Barnstormers. Grening picked up his first loss of the year in his outing at Lancaster, throwing seven innings against them on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. on Tuesday at Regency Furniture Stadium.
