WALDORF MD.—Both Sugar Land and Southern Maryland came to the park ready to hit, as the two clubs combined for 40 hits, and 29 runs in the Skeeters 18-11 victory.
The Blue Crabs got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with Angel Sanchez sacrifice fly. Gary Brown ripped a double to left that scored two runs to put Southern Maryland up 3-0 in the game.
Sugar Land’s bats came to the life in the top of the third going on to score six runs. With a runner on Jeremy Barfield smashed a homerun over the wall in left to cut the Blue Crabs lead to one. A couple of hitters later, Delwyn Young ripped an RBI double to right to tie the game at 3-3. The next hitter Wilfredo Rodriguez singled to left to score Young to give the Skeeters the lead. Jeff Dominguez then lifted a two run homerun to left to give the Skeeters the 6-3 lead.
Southern Maryland countered with a run in each of the next two innings to cut the lead to 6-5. RHP Navery Moore was summoned out of the bullpen in the fifth inning and walked the first two hitters. Jeff Dominguez then stepped the plate and drilled a three run homer over the wall in right to extend the lead to 9-5. Patrick Palmerio came forward to the plate next and went back to back with Dominguez when he homered over the wall in left to bring the score to 10-5.
Eric Garcia drove in two with a single in the bottom of the frame in the fifth to make it 10-7. Each team went on to exchange runs in the sixth and seventh to keep the game close.
Sugar Land went on to score six unanswered runs in the final two innings highlighted by Patrick Palmerio’s RBI single and Wilfredo Rodriguez bases clearing triple in the ninth to bring the score to its’ final of 18-11.
Every hitter in the starting lineup for Sugar Land picked up a hit, while the combination of Delwyn Young, Wilfredo Rodriguez, and Jeff Dominguez went 11-14, with 12 RBIs, 2 HR, and 11 Runs scored. Meanwhile for Southern Maryland, Gary Brown went 6-6 and is the first player in Blue Crabs history to go six for six in a game.
Additionally, Southern Maryland used seven pitchers out of their bullpen. Game two of the series will take place tomorrow at Regency Furniture Stadium. The first pitch is set for 6:35 P.M.
