WALDORF, MD.—A wild game that had six lead changes also saw the Blue Crabs on the wrong end of an 8-7 loss to the Somerset Patriots in game one of the four game series.
Neither starting pitcher was remotely close to having their best stuff. LHP Brian Burres, and Donovan Hand each went just two innings.
The offense was the real story of the game though as the Patriots opened up the scoring with a run scored in the top of the first when Scott Kelly scored on a wild pitch uncorked by Burres. In the bottom of the first, Michael Snyder gave the Blue Crabs the lead with a two run shot. His second homerun in as many days.
In the top of the second, Robert Kral drove in two runs with an RBI double. In the bottom of the frame, D’Arby Myers tripled, followed by Eric Garcia’s RBI single. A few batters later, Angel Sanchez singled to left on a 3-0 pitch to give the Blue Crabs the lead. In the top of the fourth, the Patriots recaptured the lead and scored three runs. Scott Kelly ripped an RBI double. Aaron Eggleston then reached base on the error by Michael Snyder. The Patriots loaded the bases and LHP Robert Carson walked Brian Van Kirk to force in a run.
Eric Garcia scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the frame to cut the Somerset lead to 6-5. Both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the eighth. Jamar Walton doubled in D’Arby Myers to tie the game. The next hitter Eric Garcia lashed a single to left to give the Blue Crabs the 7-6 lead.
The lead was short lived though, as Kyle Roller stepped to the dish and launched a two run homerun over the wall in left center to bring the score to its’ final of 8-7.
Roller had four hits on the evening, while the Patriots out-hit the Blue Crabs 13-12. Southern Maryland and Somerset will play game two of the series tomorrow night. The first pitch is set for 7:05 P.M.
