WALDORF, MD.—The Blue Crabs were looking to even the series against the Barnstormers after losing the first game Tuesday and splitting the double header Wednesday. Right-hander Daryl Thompson (4-6, 4.75) started on the mound for the Blue Crabs, facing Lancaster’s Terry Doyle (6-5, 3.28).
The Barnstormers scored first, with a pair of runs in the second inning. Third baseman Josh Bell led off with a double to right field and advanced to third on the next play. Shortstop Kevin Ahrens homered to bring two runs home and put the Barnstormers up 2-0.
Southern Maryland answered in the bottom of the sixth. Back-to-back singles by Zach Wilson and Alfredo Marte followed by an error by first baseman K.C. Hobson allowed one run to score. Gary Brown hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field to score Marte and tie the score at two.
Lancaster took the lead in the next frame with back-to-back walks by Catcher Charlie Cutler and center fielder Caleb Gindl, followed by a base hit and a sacrifice fly to score both runs. In the eighth inning the Barnstormers tacked on two more insurance runs after designated hitter Mike Jacobs walked to lead off the frame, and left fielder Trayvon Robinson homered, making the score 6-2.
The Blue Crabs rallied with one out in the bottom of the eighth to score three runs and cut their defecit to one. Alfredo Marte hit a stand-up triple to right, followed by a single from Eric Garcia that allowed him to score. Antoan Richardson singled and Angel Sanchez lobbed a base hit to center field to plate two more runs and make the score 6-5.
The Barnstormers added a run to their lead in the top of the ninth after Zach Wilson dropped a ball at first and allowed K.C. Hobson to score. The Blue Crabs went down in order in the bottom of the ninth to lose 7-5 in the final game of the series. Southern Maryland will play their next series against the York Revolution. The first game of the series is Friday, August 5th at 7:05 at Regency Furniture Stadium.
