 NEW BRITAIN CT.—Blue Crabs infielder Bryant Nelson came into play today three hits away from becoming the Atlantic League’s All-Time Hits leader.  Nelson went 2-3 in the game to tie the record as the Blue Crabs defeated the New Britain Bees 6-0 in game one of a double header.

D’Arby Myers ripped a solo homerun in the game to put the Blue Crabs up 3-0 in the top of the 5th.  After adding a run in the sixth, Southern Maryland padded their lead In the top of the seventh with two runs scored, highlighted by Bryant Nelson’s RBI single.

The other big story of the game was RHP Brian Grening’s performance on the mound.  Grening went 7.0 innings, while surrendering just three hits and striking out six.

Lancaster Barnstormers vs. Southern Maryland Blue Crabs-7:05 P.M.

Game two of the doubleheader took place a half hour after game one. After falling in game one of the doubleheader, New Britain came out swinging and scored five runs in the top of the first en route to a 10-3 victory over the Blue Crabs to split the doubleheader and weekend series.

The Bees scored nine unanswered runs in the first three innings.  New Britain put up five runs in the top of the first.  With one out, Jovan Rosa ripped an RBI single to right.  The next hitter, Craig Maddox doubled to right center to score Rosa to make it 2-0.  A couple of hitters later, Jonathan Roof doubled to center to score two runs.

In the second the Bees added a run, and put the game out of reach when the New Britain offense pushed three runs across in the bottom of the third.  With two runners on, Michael Crouse stepped to the plate and drove a homerun over the wall in left to make it 9-0.

RHP Nate Roe picked up his first win of the season, going 6.1 innings, allowing two earned runs, and striking out two.  RHP Tim Sexton struggled on the bump for the Blue Crabs, going just 3.0 innings, allowing nine earned runs on nine hits.

Gary Brown and Angel Flores homered in the 7th inning to take responsibility for the three Blue Crabs runs in the ballgame.  Southern Maryland finished the seven game Connecticut road trip 4-3 and will now return home for a seven game homestand after an off day on Monday.  The Lancaster Barnstormers come to town for a four game series beginning on Tuesday at Regency Furniture Stadium.  The first pitch is set for 7:05 P.M.  For tickets, log on to, or call 301-638-9788.  The game broadcast will be available on, Southern Maryland Blue Crabs page, and  It all begins with “Blue Crabs on Deck,” at 6:30 P.M. with the play-by-play broadcast beginning at 7:05 P.M.
