LANCASTER,PA— Zach Wilson, Gustavo Molina, Gary Brown and Eric Garcia combined to go 11-for-19 with four runs and six RBIs to lead the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs to a 7-3 win Monday night over the Lancaster Barnstorms to take the series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
The Blue Crabs struck first scoring two in the fourth. They opened the inning with back-to-back singles by designated hitter Gustavo Molina and outfielder Alfredo Marte. Molina scored on infielder Eric Garcia’s RBI groundout and Marte tacked on another run after infielder Gary Brown’s RBI single.
The Barnstormers tied the game with two runs of their own with a pair of dingers by designated hitter Mike Jacobs and catcher Charlie Cutler.
The Blue Crabs rolled up four runs on four hits in the sixth inning including a three-run home run lofted by Garcia. A couple of batters later, outfielder Antoan Richardson reached first on catchers interference and came around to score an unearned run on infielder Zach Wilson’s RBI single to extend the lead 6-2.
Barnstormers infielder Josh Bell hit a moonshot in the bottom of the frame to inch closer to the Crabs 6-3.
The Crabs added an insurance run in the top of the eighth, Brown doubled to lead off the inning, later coming home on a sac fly by Nelson to pad the lead 7-3. Blue Crabs starting pitcher Daryl Thompson picked up his third win of the season while Lancaster went through five relievers hoping to stem the tide.
Blue Crabs infielder Bryant Nelson went 2-4 in the game and is now 13 hits away from becoming the Atlantic League’s all-time hits leader. Additionally, with the win, the Blue Crabs win their first series since June 22nd and are now 3-1 after the All-Star Break. The seven game road trip continues tomorrow as Southern Maryland visits York for game one of the three game series. The first pitch is set for 6:30 P.M.
