CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y.—The Ducks put their foot on the gas early and never let up as they defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs by the final of 9-2 to sweep the day-night doubleheader.
The Ducks scored six runs of starter Tim Sexton who pitched just four innings. With the Ducks up 1-0 going into the bottom of the second, Blake Tekotte ripped a homerun over the wall in left. A few batters later, Mike Dowd scored on a wild pitch to bring the score to 3-0.
The Ducks scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth, two in the bottom of the sixth, and one in the bottom of the seventh. In the fourth, former Blue Crabs outfielder Anthony Vega stepped to the plate with two runners on and drove a homerun over the wall in right field to make it 5-0. In the sixth, Matt Wessinger drove in two more runs with a double. Dan Lyons capped off the scoring for Long Island with a solo shot in the seventh.
Zach Wilson homered on the evening for Southern Maryland, while also going 4-4 and finishing a triple shy of the cycle. On the other side of the coin, Darin Downs picked up the win for Long Island, going seven innings, allowing two runs, on eight hits, while striking out eight.
The Blue Crabs look to salvage the series tomorrow afternoon in the finale of the four game series. The first pitch is set for 1:35 P.M.
