LANCASTER, P.A.—Southern Maryland continued their winning ways on Wednesday night by defeating the Lancaster Barnstormers 5-3 in game two of the three game series.
The Blue Crabs got the scoring started in the top of the first, as Zach Wilson lifted a three run homerun over the wall in left to give Southern Maryland the early 3-0 lead. Caleb Gindl ripped a homer in the bottom of the first to put Lancaster on the board.
RHP Jon Leicester held the Barnstormers scoreless for the remainder of his outing. Leicester went seven innings, allowing a run on a hit, and striking out five. Southern Maryland padded with their lead by pushing a run across in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Fred Lewis. In the top of the eighth, Gary Brown scored on a wild pitch to bring the score to 5-1 Southern Maryland.
Lancaster added a run in the bottom of the eighth. RHP Cody Eppley was summoned out of the bullpen in the bottom of the ninth. Josh Whitaker lashed a double to start the inning. A couple of hitters later Charlie Cutler singled to drive in Whitaker to make it 5-3. Two batters later, Eppley got Logan Schafer to bounce back to the mound to end the ballgame and give the Blue Crabs the victory.
Southern Maryland has now won three straight and goes for the sweep tomorrow as the cleats step to the dirt and chase their fourth win in a row tomorrow morning in Lancaster. The first pitch is set for 11:00 A.M.
