Central Islip, N.Y.—Both teams relied on late scoring in the ballgame as Long Island came through with clutch pitching to defeat the Blue Crabs by the final of 5-4. With the game tied at 1-1 heading into the top of the seventh, Southern Maryland took the lead on an Angel Flores RBI double driving in Bryant Nelson to make it 2-1. In the bottom of the frame, Fehlandt Lentini drove in Mike Dowd with a single to once again tie the game.
In the top of the eighth, Michael Snyder came to a plate with a runner on and ripped a two run homerun over the wall in left to push the Blue Crabs back ahead 4-2. RHP Justin Berg came out of the bullpen in the last of the eighth, and gave up three runs as Dan Lyons singled to score Nate Freiman. A couple of batters later, with two on, Cody Puckett drove in two with a single to put Long Island on top for good.
RHP Gaby Hernandez went five innings, allowing a run on four hits, and striking out eight. On the other side Mark Blackmar went six innings, striking out two for Long Island. Long Island looks for the sweep tomorrow afternoon with the first pitch being thrown at 1:35. RHP Shaun Garceau (0-1, 5.68) will start for Southern Maryland, while RHP Bruce Kern (0-0, 0.00) will throw for Long Island.
