(Central Islip, NY., September 4th 2015) —Southern Maryland played the longest game of the season, and pulling out the 5-4 victory in 16 innings, in a game that spanned four hours and fifty five minutes.
Long Island got on the board first in the bottom of the second on a Randy Ruiz homerun to left center to make it 1-0 Long Island. Meanwhile, after being held scoreless for the first six innings, Southern Maryland finally scored when Casey Stevenson crossed the plate on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1. In the bottom of the sixth and two runners on base, Dan Lyons reached base on a fielder’s choice allowing Fehlandt Lentini to score to make it 2-1 Long Island.
Southern Maryland took the lead for the first time in the game in the top of the seventh. With one out, Tyler Wagner reached base via the walk. The next hitter Antone DeJesus lifted a two run homerun over the wall in right field to make it 3-2. In the bottom of the eighth, Fehlandt Lentini ripped a double to the left center gap to put the tying run in scoring position. The very next hitter Delta Cleary Jr. lashed a single to center field to score Lentini to tie the game at 3-3.
Each team went scoreless in the ninth inning to send the two teams to extra innings. In the top of the tenth, Casey Stevenson singled to right field, followed by a Zach Wilson walk to put two runners on base. The next hitter Grant Zawadzki grounded out to the first baseman Sean Burroughs to put runners at second and third. Jamar Walton then walked to the plate and bounced an infield single to third base, allowing Stevenson to score to make it 4-3. In the bottom of the frame, Lentini scored the tying run on a Dan Lyons fielder’s choice to tie the game at 4-4.
Fast forward to six innings later, and in the top of the sixteenth Southern Maryland brought the go-ahead and the winning run across the plate. Tyler Wagner led things off by being hit by a pitch. Two batter later Fred Lewis walked, followed by a Casey Stevenson singled to right field to load the bases. After Zach Wilson struck out swinging, Grant Zawadzki roped a single to center field to score Tyler Wagner to bring the score to its final of 5-4.
RHP Chris Bodishbaugh picked up the win out of the bullpen, going three innings, while RHP Tim Sexton went 6.2 innings, allowing two runs, on five hits. Meanwhile, Southern Maryland out-hit Long Island 12-10 with Casey Stevenson posting a big night at the plate going 4-7 with two runs scored. Both Grant Zawadzki, and Casey Frawley each had two hits.
Game two of the series will take place tomorrow evening in Central Islip. The first pitch is set for 6:35 P.M.
