(Waldorf, MD, August 28th 2015)—Riding the pitching performance of RHP Tim Sexton, Southern Maryland defeated the Long Island Ducks by the final of 5-2.
Sexton went six innings in a spot start, striking out seven Ducks hitters. Tim also made some big pitches in the ballgame that induced two ground ball double plays with runners on first and second in the top of the second and third innings.
Meanwhile Southern Maryland got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning with a Bryant Nelson RBI single to the left center field gap allowing Casey Stevenson to score to make it 1-0. In the bottom of the fourth, the Blue Crabs added to their lead when Keith Castillo singled to right field to make it 2-0.
Long Island finally cracked the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning. After Delta Cleary Jr. stole third base, Dan Lyons lifted a fly ball to center field allowing Cleary Jr. to score to make it 2-1.
In need of insurance runs, Southern Maryland delivered. In the last of the sixth inning, Craig Maddox got the rally started with a single off the pitcher Brownell. Casey Frawley then ripped a deep drive out to center field that bounced on the warning track, and landed on the base of the wall. Cleary Jr. hit the cutoff man Lyons who then threw a strike to homeplate to gun down Maddox trying to score from third. The next hitter Keith Castillo singled to right field allowing Frawley to score to make it 3-1. Antone DeJesus doubled down the left field line to put runners at second and third. LHP Donnie Veal was summoned out of the bullpen, and the next hitter Fred Lewis drove a single back up the middle to score Castillo, and DeJesus to make it 5-1.
Long Island added a run in the top of the ninth, but were held in check by RHP Orlando Santos who picked up his third save of the season. The combination of Sexton, and Santos recorded 13 strikeouts, while the Blue Crabs out-hit the Ducks 12-9.
Game three of the series will take place tomorrow evening at 6:35 P.M. RHP Bobby Blevins (2-4, 4.38) will throw for Long Island, while RHP Shaun Garceau (4-3, 2.73) will start for Southern Maryland.
