(Central Islip, N.Y. August 15, 2015)— Southern Maryland came into the night having lost three straight, and the losing streak extended to four with the loss tonight by the final of 8-6.
Both teams scored runs in the top of the first. In the top of the first, Antone DeJesus tripled, and later scored on an RBI groundout by Casey Stevenson to make it 1-0. In the bottom of the first Long Island claimed the lead for the first time in the game. Dan Lyons singled to left field with two outs. The next hitter Sean Burroughs doubled to right to score Lyons to tie the game. Last night’s hero Cody Puckett banged a singled to right to score Burroughs to make it 2-1 Long Island.
Long Island padded their lead with a run in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly from Ryan Gebhardt. In the top of the third, Southern Maryland cut the lead in half. With two runners on base, Gustavo Molina walked to the plate and singled to left to score Casey Stevenson to make it 3-2.
In the top of the fifth, Southern Maryland reclaimed the lead with two runs. Zach Wilson led things off with a walk. The next hitter Jovan Rosa ripped a homerun over the wall in left to make it 4-3. In the bottom of the sixth, with one out Cody Puckett singled, and the next hitter Mike Blanke homered to right to make it 5-4 Long Island. The rally continued as Anthony Vega scored on a Ryan Gebhardt sacrifice fly to right field to make it 6-4.
Each team exchanged runs in the seventh, and in the top of the eighth, Southern Maryland cut the lead to 7-6 after a Zach Wilson RBI Double to score Antone DeJesus. In the bottom of the eighth, Anthony Vega scored the run that proved to be the dagger as he crossed the plate on Fehlandt Lentini double down the left field line to make it 8-6.
Despite Southern Maryland outhitting the Ducks 15-11, they left 12 runners on base. Jovan Rosa and Tyler Wagner each had three hits. RHP Brian Grening took the loss, going 5.1 innings, giving up six runs, on eight hits. On the other side Sean Burroughs, and Mike Blanke each had two RBIs for Long Island.
RHP Bruce Kern was forced to bat in the Long Island order after a lineup error prior to the game. Blue Crabs manager Stan Cliburn was also ejected in the fifth inning for arguing a play at homeplate. It was the second time Cliburn has been ejected this season.
Southern Maryland looks to salvage the series with a win tomorrow night. The first pitch is set for 5:05 P.M. LHP Brian Burres (6-7, 4.01) will start for the Blue Crabs, while former Blue Crab RHP Ian Marshall (5-6, 3.32) will start on the bump for Long Island.
