(Waldorf, MD. August 9, 2015) — Southern Maryland was out-hit for the third straight game today, as they fell to the Bridgeport Bluefish by the final of 5-4. Southern Maryland has now dropped six straight.
Bridgeport took the early lead in the top of the third, as Luis Al. Rodriguez ripped a homerun over the wall in left field to make it 1-0. Bridgeport added a run in the fourth, and fifth to make it 3-0.
After leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Southern Maryland tied the contest in the sixth. With two runners on base, Gustavo Molina walked to the plate and ripped a line drive homerun over the wall in left field to tie the game at 3-3.
The Blue Crabs left the bases loaded again the bottom of the seventh, as both teams were held scoreless until the top of the tenth. After a rough outing just 24 hours earlier Erik Hamren came out of the bullpen to try and avenge his bad performance from the night before. Wilson Batista started the rally with a walk, followed by a Sean Burrough’s walk two batters later. After a Wes Wallace strikeout, Hamren uncorked a wild pitch to put two runners in scoring position. Luis Al Rodriguez singled back up the middle to score Batista to make it 4-3.
In the bottom of the frame in the tenth, Gustavo Molina led things off with a double. Keith Castillo came off the bench as a pinch runner, and Craig Maddox walked two batters later to put two runners on. Casey Frawley walked to the plate, and ripped a double to left center off the wall to score Castillo to tie the game at 4-4.
Bridgeport took the lead for good in the top of the 11th. RHP Orlando Santos came on out of the bullpen to throw. Matt Burns led off with a walk. Two batters later Bryant Nelson walked to put two runners on base. After a Wellington Dotel strikeout, Wilson Batista ripped a single past the sliding first baseman Zach Wilson to score Burns to bring the score to its’ 5-4 final.
Luis Al Rodriguez had a big day at the plate driving in two runs, while every hitter in the Bridgeport order had at least one hit. The Bluefish used seven pitchers overall, while Southern Maryland used six. Neither starting pitcher factored in today’s decision.
Game two of the series will take place tomorrow evening at 7:05 P.M. RHP D.J. Mitchell (6-7, 2.64) will start for Bridgeport, while RHP Brian Grening (3-6, 4.61) will throw for Southern Maryland.
