Blue Crabs Drop A Tough One Against Bridgeport

WP: C. Povich (1-1), LP: B. Grening (3-6), SV: P. Mincey (15), TIME: 2:55

(Waldorf MD. July 20th 2015) — Southern Maryland came into tonight’s ballgame having lost three straight to Bridgeport, and after Bridgeport put up a four spot in the seventh, the Bluefish snuck by the Blue Crabs by the final of 5-4.

In the top of the first, Wellington Dotel homered over the wall in left center to make it 1-0 Bridgeport.  Southern Maryland countered with two runs in the bottom of the frame receiving a two run homerun from Gustavo Molina to make it 2-1.  The Blue Crabs would add a run in the bottom of the fourth, on a Craig Maddox RBI triple to make it 3-1.  Maddox continued his good hitting in the ballgame, as he homered in the bottom of the sixth to make it 4-1 Blue Crabs.

Bridgeport cracked the code of starter Brian Grening though.  Brian went into the top of the seventh inning having given up just one hit, and sit down 13 of 14 Bridgeport hitters earlier in the game.  After a groundout, Wilson Batista doubled to right center.  That brought up Jobduan Morales who drove one over the wall in left for a two run shot to make it 4-3.  Andres Rodriguez then singled, Brandon Jones walked, and the night was over for Brian Grening.  Cody Eppley came out of the bullpen and gave up a bullet line drive single to Luis Al. Rodriguez to score Rodriguez to tie the game.  Brandon Jones then  scored on a wild pitch two pitches later to give Bridgeport the 5-4 lead.

Fast forward to the bottom of the ninth.  With runners at first and third, Gustavo Molina hit a weak groundball to second.  Bryant Nelson appeared to have tagged out the runner Wilson, and throw out Molina for the double play.  Well not so fast, because the third base umpire Donald Mayer called Wilson safe at second to put two runners in scoring position.  Jake Opitz was intentionally walked to load the bases for the next hitter Jamar Walton.  Mincey would strike out Walton swinging though to end the ballgame.

The Bridgeport bullpen combination of Povich, Niesen, Ames, and Mincey combined to hold the Blue Crabs scoreless for the final three innings.  Each team hit two homeruns in the game offensively.

Game two of the series tomorrow night at Regency Furniture Stadium.  The first pitch is set for 7:05 P.M.  RHP Jake Hale (9-3, 2.19) will toss for Southern Maryland while RHP Kameron Loe (2-2, 5.02) will throw for Bridgeport.
