(Waldorf, MD. July 17th 2015) —Coming off dropping a doubleheader yesterday, and banging out just one hit in the first game, the Blue Crabs bounce back with a bang to defeat the Camden Riversharks 14-2.
Southern Maryland banged out 17 hits, and had 14 runs to show for it. The Blue Crabs got off to an early start scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Fred Lewis started the rally with a walk. Two batters later Zach Wilson singled to put two runners on. The very next hitter Gustavo Molina doubled to drive in both Lewis and Wilson to make it 2-0. After a Jake Opitz single, Jovan Rosa came up to bat and lashed a single to center to score Molina to make it 3-0. Jamar Walton then doubled to left center to score Opitz to bring the score to 4-0.
Fast forward to the bottom of the fourth, Jovan Rosa walked, followed by a Jamar Walton single to put two runners on base. Two batters later Fred Lewis walked on a questionable pitch load the bases for Casey Stevenson who singled to center to score Rosa, and Frawley to make it 6-0. Zach Wilson came to the plate, and the first baseman lined a double to right field to score Lewis and Stevenson. This was followed by a Gustavo Molina deep drive that resulted in a double that scored Wilson 9-0.
Camden would get on the board in the top of the fifth with a Daniel Rockett homerun to left center to make it 9-1. Southen Maryland countered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, and two in the seventh. In the sixth, Casey Frawley singled to right field, followed by a line drive single by Fred Lewis to left field. Casey Stevenson came to the dish and reached base via an error by the pitcher Zachary Clark to score Frawley and Lewis. In the home half of the seventh, Jovan Rosa walked, followed by a Jamar Walton walk to put two runners on base. The next hitter Craig Maddox singled off the pitcher Singer to load the bases. Casey Frawley drove in Rosa with a fielder’s choice, and two batters later Casey Stevenson hit a sacrifice fly RBI to score Jamar Walton to bring the score to 13-1.
Camden and Southern Maryland each added a run in the eighth inning to bring the score to its’ final of 14-2. With their 17 hits, Southern Maryland was one off their season high of 18 that occurred back on the 5th of July against the Skeeters. Every hitter in the starting lineup for Southern Maryland had at least one hit, while the combination of Stevenson, Wilson, Molina, Opitz, Rosa, and Walton had 14 hits, while driving in 11 runs.
RHP Zachary Clark went seven innings, allowing 11 runs on 13 hits, and walking four taking the loss. Meanwhile Daryl Thompson picked up the win, going seven innings, allowing a run on four hits.
Game two of the three game series will take place tomorrow at Regency Furniture Stadium. The first pitch is set for 6:35 P.M. LHP Steve Garrison (1-3, 3.17) will take the hill for Camden, while RHP Brian Baker (5-4, 4.28) will start for the Blue Crabs.
