(Waldorf, MD. July 4, 2015)—After a stunning loss
to the Skeeters last night in extra innings, the Blue Crabs return the favor
winning in walk off fashion in the tenth by the final of 4-3.
Southern Maryland struck first with two runs in the bottom
of the first. Casey Stevenson doubled with one out. The next hitter
Zach Wilson banged a triple off the wall in left for an RBI triple to score
Stevenson to make it 1-0. Two batters later, Gustavo Molina singled to
score Wilson to make it 2-0.
RHP Roy Merritt would settle down though, and pitched very
well for the Skeeters. Merritt went 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on
seven hits, and striking out four. The Skeeters got on the board in the
top of the fourth as Delwyn Young laced a homerun over the wall in left center
to make it 2-1.
Fast forward to the top of the ninth, the Skeeters down 2-1
were looking to tie the game. Justin Berg came out of the bullpen to
pitch for Southern Maryland looking for the save. Joe Benson led things
off with a single. Two batters later Kevin Russo singled to put runners
at the corners. With the tying run 90 feet away, Chris Wallace came to
the plate and singled to score Benson to tie the game at 2-2. Johan
Limonta came off the bench in a pinch hit situation, and he lashed a singled to
center to score Russo to give the Skeeters the 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, Southern Maryland tied the game
as the second baseman Ryan Adams committed a throwing error allowing Jamar
Walton to score for second to tie the game at 3-3. Sugar Land left the
tying run at third in the top of the 10th, with Southern Maryland
coming to bat in the bottom of the frame.
John Lujan came on to pitch for the Skeeters. After
Zach Wilson, and Daryle Ward each flied out, Gustavo Molina singled to
left. Jake Opitz lined a single to right to put runners at first and
third. Jamar Walton was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Casey Frawley, who came into the ballgame having hit safely in 13 of his last
15 games looped a single to right center to score the game winning run, Molina
from third to give the Blue Crabs the 4-3 victory.
Offensively for Southern Maryland, Casey Stevenson, and
Gustavo Molina went 3-5 with a run scored. On the pitching side of
things, southpaw Brian Burres did not factor in the decision, but went six
innings, allowing a run on three hits.
