(York, PA., June 17th 2015) – With the league-leader Jake Hale on the mound for Southern Maryland, the Blue Crabs scored early and often and held off a late York rally to pick up the 8-5 victory over the Revolution tonight.
In the top of the first, Southern Maryland scored four runs on five hits and sent nine men to the plate. Fred Lewis led off the ballgame with a single. Casey Stevenson followed suit with a single to right to put runners at first and second. Zach Wilson then singled to score Lewis to make it 1-0. With two runners on, Gustavo Molina came to the plate and hit a three-run homer to make it 4-0.
Southern Maryland continued the scoring in the third. Gustavo Molina and Jovan Rosa both singled to put two runners on with nobody out. Two hitters later, after Jake Opitz grounded into a fielder’s choice, Jamar Walton came to the plate and singled to score Molina to make it 5-0. Anthony Vega then singled to score Opitz to make it 6-0.
York would earn a run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. With runners at first and second, Brandon Boggs singled to score Telvin Nash to make it 6-1. In the bottom of the sixth, Nick Ferdinand led things off for York with a solo home run for the Revolution. Two batters later, Brandon Boggs homered over the wall in right to make it a 6-3 ballgame.
The Revolution made things interesting by adding a run in the seventh and eighth innings. Bryan Pounds doubled to score Starlin Rodriguez, and in the eighth, with runners at first and second, Starlin Rodriguez singled to score Shannon Wilkerson to make it a 6-5 ballgame.
York’s defense would fall apart in the ninth, however, and Southern Maryland would add two runs on the miscues. With two gone, Casey Stevenson lashed a single to center. Zach Wilson then reached first on an error by the third baseman Bryan Pounds. After Gustavo Molina advanced to first on an error by the pitcher Josh Judy to score Casey Stevenson, Jovan Rosa reached first base on an error by the shortstop Wilson Valdez to score Zach Wilson to make it an 8-5 ballgame.
Closer Erik Hamren sat the Revolution down in order in the ninth to pick up the save and the Blue Crabs 8-5 victory. RHP Jake Hale picked up his seventh win of the night, going six innings, allowing four runs, on nine hits, and striking out five. Gustavo Molina banged out three hits and drove in three runs, while Casey Stevenson and Jamar Walton had two hits apiece.
The series will conclude tomorrow evening with game three of the series. RHP Jon Leicester (2-0, 1.93) will start for Southern Maryland, while LHP Logan Williamson (1-3, 2.30) will start for York. The first pitch of the rubber game of the series will be thrown at 6:30 P.M.
