Weekend Recap: Blue Crabs go on three-game tear, win second consecutive series.

Weekend Recap: Simply put, the Blue Crabs are on a roll. Tied with the Somerset Patriots for a league-best 7-3 record through the last 10 games, the Blue Crabs have climbed their way to top of the Freedom Division after completing a convincing weekend sweep of the York Revolution.

Now in the midst of a league-leading four-game winning streak, the Blue Crabs will aim to continue their winning ways as they wrap things up in York on Monday before returning home for a seven-game homestand beginning on Tuesday (7:05pm vs. Sugar Land).

Looking back: Coming into Friday night, to say that the Blue Crabs offense had been uneven would be an understatement. While individual players like catcher Gustavo Molina and outfielder Cyle Hankerd can be found among the league leaders in batting statistics, the Blue Crabs have struggled with leaving runners on base to this point (they’ve left 124 men on base through May 10 – only Bridgeport has left more on base with 125 LOB).

While the inconsistent nature of clutch hitting is often a product of a team still looking to find its groove against solid pitching, it’s a promising sign to see that the Blue Crabs have blown away the rest of the league in on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS). With a team OPS sitting at .723, the Blue Crabs have found ways to get runners on-base and hit with power at the plate, and the ability to get runners in the base paths finally paid dividends for the team this weekend. Additionally, the defense has been rock solid for the Blue Crabs and has helped to anchor the team’s pitching staff. The Blue Crabs currently lead the league with a .986 fielding percentage.

Notables: Although the Blue Crabs have played true team baseball to elevate themselves into a winning record, the team features some stand-out talent that have put together noteworthy performances in the team’s recent surge.

After knocking in another home run this weekend, Gustavo Molina now holds the league’s third-best slugging percentage (.590). To put that into perspective, Mike Trout is currently hitting with a .596 slugging percentage at the Major League level.

Outfielder Cyle Hankerd is still among the top-5 players in the league in batting average (.366). His .426 on-base percentage is good for third-best in the Atlantic League as well. Paralleling his abilities at the plate has been Hankerd’s error-free efforts in the outfield.

On the mound, Brian Burres has been the team’s best pitcher to this point and continues to prove that the win/loss record for pitchers is a deceiving statistic. Though he missed his most recent start due to an injury, the southpaw holds a 1.93 ERA through three games.

Looking forward: Following the completion of the series against the Revolution on Monday, the Blue Crabs will return to friendly territory for a seven-game home stand beginning on Tuesday (7:05pm) with a three-game set against the Sugar Land Skeeters. The team will complete the home stand with a four-game series against the Somerset Patriots.
