(Waldorf, MD., May 6th, 2015) – With Regency Furniture Stadium packed with children from all different schools in the area, the Blue Crabs fall to the Riversharks 6-2 in the first morning game of the 2015 season.
One of the big stories of the ballgame was the defense for Camden. With runners on first and second and nobody out in the bottom of the second for Southern Maryland, Gustavo Molina came to the plate and hit a hot shot to the third baseman Mike Costanzo. Costanzo picked it, stepped on third, threw to second and Dan Hennigan finished the 5-4-3 triple play with a chest-high throw to Ryan Strieby at first base to end the rally for Southern Maryland.
In the ninth inning, Craig Maddox put a charge into one, driving it to right-center field. The Centerfielder Michael Rockett sprinted into the gap and made the diving catch, robbing Maddox of an extra base hit and costing the Blue Crabs a run.
Each team traded blows, scoring a run in the first inning. In the top of the fourth, the Riversharks put a run on the board. Ryan Strieby led off the inning with a single to right field. Two batters later, Jeremy Barfield would single to left field, and Joel Guzman would follow with a single to left to score Strieby and give Camden a 2-1 lead.
In the 7th inning, Brandon Chaves started the inning with a double when shortstop Casey Frawley, and left fielder Cyle Hankerd collided going for the fly ball. Dan Hennigan would then ground out, allowing Chaves to move to third base. Mike Costanzo would be intentionally walked and Ryan Strieby would come to the plate and drive in the runner Chaves from third on the sac fly.
The Blue Crabs would answer in the bottom of the seventh with a Gustavo Molina Homerun to left field, his first of the season. The Riversharks would pull away though in the eighth as Jeremy Barfield led off the inning with a single to center. Two batters later Eddie Sorondo would single to left. With runners at first and second Michael Rockett would drop down the bunt. Orlando Santos came off the mound to field it, and threw wide to first base allowing both Barfield and Sorondo to score and make it a 6-2 ball game, and the Riversharks never looked back.
LHP Bill Murphy picked up the win, going seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. RHP Shaun Garceau took the loss, pitching six innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and striking out five.
The two clubs will play the third and final game of this series tomorrow at Regency Furniture Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. It will be a seven-inning ballgame. LHP Ryan Kulik (1-0, 1.74 ERA) will take the mound for Camden, and Gaby Hernandez (1-1, 3.75 ERA) will start for Southern Maryland.
