The Somerset Patriots score four runs in the ninth to help send them to a 6-1 victory over the Blue Crabs at Regency Furniture Stadium. The loss was the third to the Patriots on opening night in the last five years.
Justin Berg took the loss, going an inning in the 8th, giving a run on a hit. Kyler Newby picked up the victory in middle inning relief pitching a scoreless bottom of the 7th inning.
Somerset got the scoring started in the fifth inning with a Scott Cousins single. Cousins then went on to steal second and third and would score on a sacrifice fly by David Vidal to make it 1-0. The Blue Crabs would answer in the bottom of the frame, receiving a solo Home Run from Jake Opitz to tie the game 1-1.
The Patriots would then go on to score again in the eighth. David Vidal led off the inning with a single, and would later score on a Sacrifice Fly by Jonny Tucker bringing the score to 2-1.
Somerset then went on to score four runs in the ninth. Matt Gamel led off the inning with a single, followed by a Chris Marrero double. Scott Cousins, who went 4-4 with two RBIs worked the count in his favor and singled to center to drive in two runs. Four batters later, Jonny Tucker drove in Cousins on a fielder choice to bring the score to 6-1.
Fred Lewis walked to start the ninth, followed by a Hankerd single to left, and a Ward single to right to load the bases. Patriot’s manager Brett Jodie then went to his bullpen and called on Jon Hunton. The Blue Crabs were unable to capitalize on the threat as Zach Wilson sand Brandon Snyder both struck out to end the ballgame and leave the bases loaded. Southern Maryland left 15 runners on base for the game, having left at least a runner on in every inning but one.
Cyle Hankerd led the way for Southern Maryland going 4-5 at the plate, while Casey Frawley went 2-4.
The Blue Crabs continue their series tomorrow against Somerset on Saturday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 as right-hander Mickey Storey gets the start for Somerset against righty Shaun Garceau for the Blue Crabs.
